To the me before I was Mom,
I know it’s hard to prepare for something you’ve never done before. You look to other mamas for advice and wisdom. You’re reading all the posts and blogs and articles. But in all seriousness, you’ll never be fully prepared. Your world is about to change in so many ways.
And it will be so worth it.
You’re always hearing the “just waits” of motherhood. Just wait until they have their first blowout. Until you are only running on 2 hours of sleep. Until you have a million bottle parts to wash. Until the four month sleep regression. Until you realize you’re a human pacifier. Until they start teething. Until they start crawling all over the house. Until they start throwing tantrums.
I wish someone had told me about the other “just waits.”
Like just wait until they place your baby on your chest. Your heart will be full of so much love you won’t know what to do with it all.
Just wait until you kiss your baby’s soft head for the first time and smell their oh so perfect baby skin.
Just wait until you put their first outfit on. It will shock you how fast they grow out of it.
Just wait until you see them all scrunched in their carseat as you pack to leave the hospital. Those memories stay with you forever.
Just wait until you introduce your sweet babe to all your family. What a joy it is to share your little miracle with the people you love most.
Just wait until you give them their first bath and they kick their tiny toes in the warm water.
Just wait until you watch them while they try to figure out their surroundings. It’s incredible to watch the world through your child’s eyes.
Just wait until they roll over. Until they sit up all by themselves. You’ll beam with pride.
Just wait until they’re old enough to start tasting food. Their face is just as cute when it’s covered in yogurt or avocado.
Just wait until they learn to crawl, and you see that they are as excited as you are.
Just wait until they reach their arms up to you, just wanting to be held by the one person in the world that they feel safest with.
Just wait until their personality starts to show more. Until you get to know their small quirks and favorite activities. They will be your tiny best friend.
Just wait until you take them on their first family vacation. You’ll make so many memories together.
Just wait until they take that first step. You’ll be their biggest cheerleader, and they know it.
It will be bittersweet watching your baby hit every milestone, watching them grow up. Because you know they’re only this little once.
